In addition to his ongoing work with the ICP Orchestra, Thomas Heberer maintains a busy performance and recording schedule with numerous New York City based ensembles.
This latest outing presents his quartet with 8 new originals, ranging from the hot-blooded “Mongezi” – an homage to cornetist Mongezi Feza, to the sublime “Living Brushes” – inspired by artist Yves Klein.
Unlike some of Heberer’s other recorded work, which focuses on improvising,
“X Marks the Spot” is an album of compositions.
Thomas’ tunes have a mesmerizing clarity here and are full of unpretentious melodic and rhythmical ideas, expertly interpreted by the band. While each tune is an entity in itself, the totality of the CD gives a feeling of unity; a joy to listen to.

We need more Rachel Musson in our lives. A bright and creative player that is so painfully understated in her sound that you find more with each and every listen. Also search out Transoceanico on 577, and recognise: we need more Rachel Musson. tachymètre

"Wow!" is far too mild of an expletive to use when describing Myra Melford's Snowy Egret album, The Other Side of Air.(Though I am trying to keep this G rated, so it will have to suffice...) If you are a vinyl lover like me, grab it while you can. It IS a limited edition! 😎 Rick Mathis
