In addition to his ongoing work with the ICP Orchestra, Thomas Heberer maintains a busy performance and recording schedule with numerous New York City based ensembles.
This latest outing presents his quartet with 8 new originals, ranging from the hot-blooded “Mongezi” – an homage to cornetist Mongezi Feza, to the sublime “Living Brushes” – inspired by artist Yves Klein.
Unlike some of Heberer’s other recorded work, which focuses on improvising,
“X Marks the Spot” is an album of compositions.
Thomas’ tunes have a mesmerizing clarity here and are full of unpretentious melodic and rhythmical ideas, expertly interpreted by the band. While each tune is an entity in itself, the totality of the CD gives a feeling of unity; a joy to listen to.

Nobody, giant or otherwise could sleep through that opening section!...I liken it to the struggle for life...working/striving for balance in a musical/ecological domain... (what?) oh, its groovy too! Bob Ross
